The Institute of Ecology and Genetics of Microorganisms was organized in 1988 on the basis of the Department of Breeding and Genetics of Microorganisms of the Institute of Plant and Animal Ecology of the Ural Scientific Center of the USSR Academy of Sciences. The first director ( 1988 - 2003) was academician Valery Aleksandrovich Chereshnev. Currently, the institute includes 8 scientific divisions. In 2017, the Institute became part of Perm Federal Research Center UB RAS.
PRIA is the oldest agricultural research institution in the Western Urals. In 1913, the official opening of the Perm provincial agricultural experimental station took place, initially intended to solvie the problems of the cultivation of the poor sod-podzolic soils of the Urals. The preservation and improvement of soil fertility, which is the main means of agricultural production, remains one of the main fields of the institute work of up to the present time.
In 1988 after numerous transformations and change of location the Research Institute of Agriculture was established in Lobanovo on the basis of the experimental station. In 2017, the institute became part of the PFRC UB RAS.
